ETHIOPA – SOMALIA Relations Toward Back on Track

H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia met with H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Mogadishu on February 17, 2025. The working visit by the Prime Minister follows consecutive recent engagements which the meeting of the two leaders reinforces for normalization of bilateral relations between the two nations, it was stated.
According to the Communiqué, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit taking into account the deep historical ties between their peoples and the shared border that connects them. To this effect, they emphasized the importance of building trust through enhanced diplomatic, economic and social cooperation.
The Communiqué further states: “Ethiopia and Somalia are interdependent nations with common density and a shared vision for regional stability and prosperity”. With this understanding, both leaders expressed their commitment to implementing strategic infrastructure projects to ensure sustainable development, economic integration and strengthen people- to- people ties.
Referring to the technical talks held in Ankara, Turkey, the two leaders welcomed commencement of the talks as agreed in the Ankara Declaration and underscored their commitment under constructive dialogue and cooperation. The leaders also welcomed the understanding reached between the Somali National Army (SNA) and Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) commanders, recognizing it as a critical step toward enhancing security cooperation and fostering stability in the region, the Communiqué stated.
The Communiqué concludes, “The two sides reiterated their determination to work together in advancing common interests; promoting peace and security; and deepening bilateral relations for the well- being of their citizens and broader Horn of Africa region”.
The move by Ethiopia and Somalia towards normalization of relations as expressed here above is a positive development for stability, peace and security in this part of the world. Once the leaders of the countries paved the way to work towards normalization of relations, the connection between people-to-people would be easier owing to their shared cultural and historical ties. The CDG appreciates the efforts of the leaders of the two countries towards normalization of relations for common benefits.
